Herculaneum
The second field trip we went on was to Herculaneum, a city closer to Mt. Vesuvius than Pompeii. This city was destroyed via pyroclastic surges, as opposed to the ash that Pompeii was buried in. The buildings were preserved better because the roofs did not collapse before the surges reached the city. The original wood was preserved as charcoal and still supports some walls in the buildings.
Oplontis

The third field trip we went on was to Oplontis. This was a villa that belonged to the third wife of the Roman emperor Nero. This was the most well-preserved sites we went to because it was only excavated in the 1960's. Many of the frescoes and mosaics were preserved in their original position and excellent condition. This was my favorite field trip because everything was so well-preserved, you could visualize life there easily.
